How the Five Grids work
A name is split into surname · middle name · given name, the strokes of each part are counted, and the counts are combined into five grids. Each grid maps to a number and to one of the five elements.
| Grid | Taken from | Usually read for |
|---|---|---|
| Heaven | The surname | Family origin — not chosen by you |
| Personality | Joins surname and given name | The core of character and fortune in this system |
| Earth | The given name | Early life |
| External | The outer parts | Relations with others, outside support |
| Total | The whole name | The overall picture, later life |
The decisive step is the Three Talents — how the elements of the Heaven, Personality and Earth grids produce or control one another.
Six things you can analyse
All six share the same Five Grids core; only the interpretation context differs:
- Personal name · Company or brand name
- Phone number — split into leading, middle and trailing parts
- Licence plate · Bank account · ID number

The Five Grids system was built on Chinese character stroke counts. Applied to a Latin-script name it is a reasonable analogy, not a measurement — so please do not change your name because of a number on a screen.
In the tradition a name is never judged alone. The order is: build the BaZi chart first, find the element that needs reinforcing, and only then choose a name whose element supports it. A “high-scoring” name that fights the useful god means nothing.
