Feng shui for a home — compass and star chart

Enter a compass bearing and get the sitting–facing pair, the Eight Mansions map for the occupant, and the Flying Star chart for the period — plus an external form check.

Two systems, two different questions

SystemAnchored onAnswers
Eight Mansions
八宅
The person — their Gua number from birth year and genderWhich of the eight directions suit this occupant
Flying Stars
玄空飛星
The building — its facing and the period it was built inHow the energy of each sector behaves, and how it changes over time

They are not rivals and they do not always agree. Classical practice reads the building first and the occupant second.

Taking the bearing correctly

Everything downstream depends on this one number, so it is worth doing carefully:

  • Measure the direction the front of the building faces, in degrees from 0 to 360.
  • Stand back from the wall and away from metal, cars, switchboards and reinforced concrete — all of them pull a compass needle.
  • Take the reading three times from slightly different spots and use the middle value.
  • A bearing near the edge between two of the 24 mountains gives a mixed direction; the tool flags this rather than silently rounding, because the two neighbours can read very differently.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a real compass?
A phone compass is usually good enough if you take the reading away from metal and reinforced walls. If the readings jump by more than a few degrees as you move around, the environment is interfering and you need a proper compass outdoors.
What is a Gua number?
A number from one to nine derived from birth year and gender, which sorts a person into the East or West group. Each group has four favourable and four unfavourable directions in the Eight Mansions system.
My two systems disagree about the same room. Which wins?
Classically, the building’s chart carries more weight than the occupant’s directions, and both are outranked by the external forms — a blocked entrance or a sharp corner pointed at the door matters more than a sector name.
Can feng shui fix a badly built flat?
It can suggest how to use a space better. It cannot move a load-bearing wall, and any practitioner who promises guaranteed outcomes is selling something else.
