Three ways to cast

How to ask
The tradition is strict about this, and it is not superstition — it is what makes an answer readable:
- One question at a time, phrased concretely. “Should I take this job offer?” reads far better than “What about my career?”
- Ask once. Re-casting the same question until you like the answer destroys the reading.
- Note the changing lines. They are where the movement is — the hexagram alone is only half the picture.

Frequently asked questions
What is the I Ching?
The Book of Changes, one of the oldest Chinese classics. Its sixty-four hexagrams are built from six lines that are either solid or broken, and each hexagram carries a text describing a situation and its movement.
What are changing lines?
Lines that are at their extreme and therefore turn into their opposite, producing a second hexagram. The first hexagram describes the situation now; the second describes where it is heading. Most of the practical reading lives in the changing lines.
Is Plum Blossom or Six Lines better?
Neither is better; they answer differently. Plum Blossom is fast and image-led. Six Lines is analytical and tells you more about people involved and timing, at the cost of a longer learning curve.
Does it matter that a computer casts it instead of coins?
Traditionally, the sincerity of the question matters more than the instrument. That said, if the physical act of casting helps you focus, use coins and enter the lines manually.
