516 pages, [8] leaves of plates : 13 cm; False imprint. According to the British Book Trade Index online, there was was no John Smith printing at that address in 1779; Added engraved title page with color vignette and title: Medical knowledge, and imprint: London, for the booksellers; Aristotle's Masterpiece, a manual of sex and pregnancy, first saw the light of day about 1680. It is not, of course, the work of the ancient Greek philosopher, but its true authorship is unclear: the name of William Salmon has been suggested. Other works by the same or other hands were accreted to the original "Masterpiece" until by about 1735 the four parts here published made up the canon. Banned in Britain until the 1960's, it nonetheless has had a long but mostly clandestine career as a quasi-pornographic book. Grubby copies were produced in back-street printers, sold in rubber-goods shops or Holywell Street, and passed from hand to hand until they disintegrated. Many young boys got their first inklings of sex from it. It was also sometimes given by their mothers to women about to get married; the effect it had on the mind of a virgin bride can only be conjectured. Tập sách này là một ấn phẩm gộp bốn văn bản vốn lưu hành độc lập trong dòng sách y khoa và sinh lý học phổ thông bằng tiếng Anh: Aristotle's Masterpiece, Family Physician, Experienced Midwife và Book of Problems kèm Remarks on Physiognomy. Tên Aristotle hoàn toàn không chỉ tác giả đích thực. Masterpiece ra đời khoảng 1680 dưới dạng cẩm nang về tính dục và thai nghén; học giới từ lâu đặt nghi vấn về người biên soạn, trong đó William Salmon là ứng viên được nhắc nhiều nhất, nhưng chưa có kết luận dứt khoát. Các phần còn lại được gắn thêm dần vào bản gốc, đến khoảng 1735 thì bốn phần hợp thành một "canon" như ta thấy ở đây.
Việc quy thuộc niên đại và nơi in là chỗ cần dè chừng. Trang tựa ghi London, 1779, John Smith, 79 High Holborn, nhưng theo British Book Trade Index thì không hề có nhà in John Smith mang địa chỉ ấy vào năm 1779. Đây là một trong nhiều bản in lậu quen thuộc của dòng sách này: trang tựa khắc kèm tiêu đề Medical knowledge và dòng imprint "for the booksellers" cũng phản ánh ngả lưu hành phi chính thức ấy. Cuốn thuộc khối sách bị kiểm cấm ở Anh, bởi vậy các bản thường hay đổi tên, đổi imprint, và dị văn tích lũy qua nhiều lần nhái in.
