Cuốn sách tập hợp các tham luận về giấc mơ trong thế giới Byzantine và những vùng ảnh hưởng, do nhiều tác giả đóng góp, phần lớn gắn với giới nghiên cứu Byzantine học đương đại. Đây là loại công trình chuyên khảo tập thể, đặt hiện tượng mơ và thị kiến vào bối cảnh văn học, tôn giáo và y học của Đông La Mã, chứ không phải sách bói toán ứng dụng theo nghĩa thông thường.

Việc kho xếp sách vào mục Bói Toán nhiều khả năng phản ánh đề tài giấc mơ hơn là nội dung thực tế, và người đọc nên phân biệt điều này. Các bài trong tập khảo sát những thể loại quen thuộc của dòng nghiên cứu ấy: giấc mơ trong tiểu sử tu sĩ, mơ chữa lành trong các tập truyện phép lạ, thị kiến trong văn học tu viện sơ kỳ, cùng các thiên khảo sát riêng về Prokopios, về Continuation of Theophanes hay về một số tác phẩm khác.

Điểm đáng lưu ý về phương pháp là giới nghiên cứu vẫn chưa thống nhất cách phân loại và diễn giải giấc mơ Byzantine: có người theo truyền thống phân tâm học, có người đặt nặng truyền thống văn chương và thần học, lại có người coi đó là dữ liệu xã hội học về niềm tin và chữa bệnh. Cuốn này thuộc xu hướng đọc giấc mơ như một hiện tượng văn hoá có quy ước riêng, nên độ tin cậy của nó phụ thuộc vào từng bài. Sách có thư mục và chỉ mục, thuận tiện cho việc tra cứu.
