Woodwind was an alternative newspaper intended to foster 'an optimistic sense of community through the arts' in Washington, D.C. This issue includes Richard Cromelin with a history of the Beach Boys; Woodwind writers and kid volunteers (Allen Appel, Ellen Jaffe, Richard Jester, Mark Power, Tadd Cameron, Glyde Hart, Neil Korpi, Kristin Moeller, and Calea Stovall) deployed to review D.C. fast food restaurants, including Hot Shoppes Jr., Papa Gino's, McDonald's, Burger Chef, Eddie Leonard's, Roy Rogers, Armand's Subway, The Gallery and Blimpie; an illustration and explanation of hexagram 43 of the I Ching; a full page illustrated advertisement for Gallery Marc's 'Blue Lotus Roller Derby' group show featuring local artists Ascian [Jonathan Meader], Gregory Kwater, Kristin Moeller, Allen Appel, George Founds, Octavio Perez, Richard Jester, Timothy Amussen and Richard Gallatin; Cecily Pearson interviewing Meader, Appel and Jester about the show; a half-page ad for the debut EP by local band Claude Jones; Jonathan Eberhart with an overview and appreciation of Nonesuch Records' 'Explorer' world music series; James Leed with an analysis of underground comics reprinted from Druid Free Press; Cerphe Colwell with an profile of D.C. musician Rick Lyon; a notice about an upcoming 'Hi School Regional Antiwar Conference'; an uncredited profile of actor Rip Torn; Michael Dixon reviewing Timothy Leary's Jail Notes; poetry by Grace Cavalieri, Jesse Lou McCarty and Michelle Murphy; illustrations by 'Razzel Dazzel'; and ads for local businesses and events.Publication dates before 10/13/71 are surmised from ads and calendar listings, and should be considered approximate.Scanned from an original in the collection of the People's Archive, DC Public Library.
