Binding: early pigskin, perhaps contemporary. Boards tooled in blind with fillets and a foliate roll to form central reserves with panel stamps. That on the top board has a port. of Emperor Charles V. That on the bottom has the arms of the Holy Roman Empire incorporating the initials HB, for Heinrich Blume (Haebler I, p. 42). Title written on paper label at head of spine, remains of another label at foot. Page edges sprinkled red and blue Old signature written at either side of printer's device on t.p.: Francisci / Richard. Pencilled shelfmarks on front endpapers: DoXII/I, 0599 Don (Donaueschingen?) First published 1586 with engraved plates at Vico Equense [Naples] by Giuseppe Cacchi Printer's device on t.p. Port. of author on t.p. verso, his arms at lower right corner. On )(4v is port. of Cardinal Luigi d'Este (1538-1586), to whom the work is dedicated. Numerous woodcut ill., many of them juxtaposing human facial types with the faces of animals (repeats).
